In the flood-prone regions of Assam and Maharashtra, where the monsoon inevitably brings the risk of flooding, communities have learned to live with the uncertainty. Each year, rising waters threaten homes, livelihoods, and schools, leaving families in a race against time to protect what they can.

To address this recurring challenge, Bosconet, with the support of UPS Express Pvt. Ltd., is implementing the Strategic Action for Flood Emergencies (SAFE) initiative in collaboration with the on-ground partners BOSCO REACH OUT, Konkan Development Society, and AIDA. The programme focuses on strengthening local capacity for flood preparedness, disaster risk reduction, and emergency response.

At the heart of SAFE is community ownership. Local volunteers are trained as disaster relief support team members, equipped with practical skills in rescue coordination and emergency response. Awareness sessions with local leaders, youth groups, community members, and students promote a culture of preparedness and proactive risk mitigation.

To further strengthen response mechanisms, essential rescue equipment has been provided to local governing bodies across three districts, ensuring timely and coordinated action during emergencies.

Since its inception, 20 volunteers have been trained as rescue support team members. The programme has reached 37 local leaders, 365 youth, 45 community members, and 414 students, building informed and prepared communities.

With its sustained focus on capacity building and preparedness, the SAFE initiative continues to strengthen local resilience, reduce vulnerability to flood disasters, and empower communities to protect lives and livelihoods.
