Remedial Education and Development (READ): Strengthening Learning Foundations for Children in Maharashtra

Access to quality education remains a key challenge for children from vulnerable communities in Ahmednagar, Maharashtra. To address this gap, Bosconet is implementing a Remedial Education and Child Development programme that focuses on strengthening foundational learning, life skills, and community engagement for 750 children aged 6 to 17 years.

In the current phase, 25 remedial education centres have been established across villages, supported by the recruitment and training of 25 Tutors-cum-Outreach Workers drawn from the same communities. Children were identified through structured sensitisation, household mapping, and enrolment processes carried out in collaboration with schools, Anganwadi centres, and community leaders, ensuring widespread participation and need-based targeting.

Strengthening Learning Through Community-Based Remedial Education

The programme delivers structured remedial classes aimed at bridging learning gaps in Mathematics, Language, and Science. Centres operate from accessible community spaces such as Panchayat halls and donated facilities, creating safe, child-friendly learning environments equipped with appropriate teaching materials and structured curricula.

Tutors-cum-Outreach Workers play a dual role by delivering classroom instruction and maintaining regular outreach with families. Activities such as home visits, Bal Panchayat sessions, life skills education, and child rights awareness programmes strengthen parental engagement, promote leadership and democratic participation among children, and encourage consistent attendance. Cultural and national celebrations further enhance unity, community bonding, and joyful learning experiences.

Children’s academic progress is monitored through baseline assessments and continuous tracking. Individualised Education Plans support learners requiring additional attention, while regular pedagogical trainings and monthly review meetings enhance teaching quality and tutor capacity.
