Bosconet, through Don Bosco Nitika, Tangra, with support from a corporate donor, is implementing a remedial education and child development programme to improve learning outcomes and overall well-being for 600 children from vulnerable communities in Tangra, Kolkata (West Bengal).
In this phase, children were identified through a structured baseline assessment aligned with government learning benchmarks. Academic competencies in core subjects such as Language and Mathematics were evaluated, along with socio-economic profiling to ensure targeted enrolment. The assessment revealed significant foundational learning gaps, which guided the design and delivery of focused remedial interventions across all centres.
Driving Academic Progress Through Community-Based Education
The programme operates 22 remedial education centres across slum clusters in Tangra to ensure accessibility and sustained participation. Each centre provides a safe, child-friendly learning environment supported by essential academic resources. Daily tuition sessions focus on strengthening foundational skills in Mathematics, Science, and English, with personalised support for children requiring additional attention.
To ensure effective delivery, 22 Tuition Teacher-cum-Outreach Workers were recruited locally and trained through a structured induction process. Their engagement enhances instructional quality, cultural relevance, and consistent outreach with children and families.
Integrated Support for Holistic Child Development
The initiative integrates academic learning with nutrition, health awareness, and digital inclusion to address multiple barriers to education. Monthly ration kits and weekly healthy snacks support children’s nutritional needs, contributing to better concentration and attendance. Health and hygiene education, including menstrual hygiene awareness for adolescent girls, promotes informed practices and overall well-being.
Digital learning is strengthened through upgraded computer facilities, expanding access to basic digital skills and technology-enabled education. Regular extracurricular activities further support confidence-building, social interaction, and holistic development.
