Children of migrant labourers in Kolkata’s urban slums often navigate irregular schooling and limited access to structured learning environments. Project Asha Sishu Shikha, implemented across 11 Educational Rehabilitation Centres in Kolkata by Don Bosco Ashalayam, focused on strengthening foundational learning, awareness, and everyday life skills. The program worked simultaneously with children, educators, and parents to improve learning continuity and engagement in a post-pandemic (2023-2024).
Key Interventions & Impact
● Conducted thematic workshops for educators on classroom management, lesson planning, and student engagement
● Organised child rights training covering protection, hygiene, and access to education
● Facilitated parent meetings on school attendance, health, and government schemes
● Distributed learning materials, including books, slates, and art supplies
● Delivered life skills sessions on hygiene, communication, and daily routines
● Reached children across 11 Educational Rehabilitation Centres in Kolkata
Strengthening Learning and Participation
The program strengthened classroom practices, increased children’s awareness of their rights, and encouraged active participation in learning. Greater parental involvement and access to learning materials contributed to a more consistent and supportive educational environment for children.
